  2. The word consumer seems to use pejoratively being something evil or wrong in and of itself.  It seems that our initial approach to Jesus is as a consumer.  It is clear that the first ones called by Jesus came with consumerist intentions (sit at the right hand!).

    The issue of consumerism in the Christianity seems to lie in whether we create cultures that can move people from consumer to producer in their understanding of the kingdom teaching of Jesus.  Or allow them once interested to remain in their consumeristic state thru constant entertainment.

    That strategy is bound in our message of the Cross.  What kind of gospel do we espouse and how do we propagate it?  Missional mindset with an aberrant gospel still leads to consumerism.  When I say aberrant I am not speaking of heresy in the historical sense.  I am suggesting that the “typical” gospel that emphasizes forgiveness as an end rather than a means leads to consumerism.

    American evangelicalism has long robbed the gospel of its “ownership” message in exchange for and “experience” message.  That type of gospel no matter what your strategy will lead to a consumeristic expression of Christianity.
