Francis Chan
Francis Chan is the best-selling author of books, Crazy Love, Forgotten God, Erasing Hell and the host of the BASIC.series (Who is God & We Are Church). He has also written the children’s books Halfway Herbert, The Big Red Tractor and the Little Village and Ronnie Wilson’s Gift. Francis is the founding pastor of Cornerstone Church in Simi Valley, California, and is the founder of Eternity Bible College. He also sits on the board of directors of World Impact.   3. In its very defiance of cults, this clip actually enables them. It’s instructing us to extract the Bible from culture, theology and doctrine. This is impossible — the Bible is as inseparable from those elements as people are. (ie Whether you believe that God exists or not, you have a theological perspective. And the instant you read Scripture, you’re starting to developing a doctrine.)

    Furthermore, when we try to extract the Bible from that which gives it its meaning, and think that all of its truth will be self-evident to the solitary leader, we open ourselves up to a sweeping array of misconceptions. Add that to the “courage” being exhorted here, and things are quite likely to go dangerously awry.

    Finally, I would like to point out a paradox. Chan ends by rejecting a unspecified system, saying that it’s not what he would have done from a purely biblical perception. What he’s missing is that even rejecting a cultural form is being influenced by that cultural form.

    The push and pull of community is intrinsic to our humanity. The Bible doesn’t flee from it — it engages it deeply!

    Chan is saying that we need to read the Bible without any preconceived ideas. To properly exegete the scriptures, we need to look at 5 steps: preparation, observation, interpretation, meditiation, and then application. To interpret the Bible accurately we must examine it not from our culture, but from the culture of the original audience being addressed in each book of the Bible! We must understand their social, political, and historical background first before we attempt to give an application of what that verse means for us today. You are saying that it is impossible to extract the Bible from this culture today. You cannot interpret it in light of modern culture, but in light of the culture in which it is written.
